DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Johannes Suitner (TU Wien\, Institute of Spatial Pla
nning\, Research Unit Urban and Regional Research)\, Lenka Štěpánková
(Brno University of Technology\, Faculty of Architecture)\n\nSpatial plann
ing at the fringes\nAESOP YA PhD Workshop 2026\, 22-25 September @ Drosend
 orf\, Austria\nCall for applications: 14 January – 27 February 2026Notif
 ication of acceptance: 01 April 2026Registration: 15 April – 31 May 2026
\nMulti-layered socio-ecological crises and increasing geopolitical instab
ility are not only putting established societal values and development pat
hs into question. They require profound societal and spatial transformatio
ns and thus call for innovative\, potentially unconventional approaches to
spatial planning. In times of crisis\, however\, unconventional practices
\, perspectives or lifestyles are often sidelined or even marginalized –
they are pushed to the fringe. Entitled “Spatial planning at the fringe
s”\, the AESOP PhD Workshop 2026 aims to place these fringes at the cent
re of spatial planning debate. This encompasses the very spatial as well a
s metaphorical fringes – from marginalized areas to socio-ecological lim
its\, from innovative niches to uncharted methodologies and practices in p
lanning research and praxis. (for details\, see Scientific Program)\n\nWor
kshop location: Drosendorf castle \nThe municipality of Drosendorf will b
e the PhD workshop’s homebase. It is located in the picturesque rural re
gion of Waldviertel\, northwest of Vienna. Drosendorf is a historically si
gnificant place: Once a vacation destination for the summer retreat of the
imperial court and aristocratic elites\, its role turned into a negligibl
e border town at the Iron Curtain. With European integration and the found
ation of the Thayatal national park\, the whole border region has recently
turned into a tourism destination again\, reviving the area’s built and
cultural heritage. Yet\, the rural border region is only located at the e
dge of the catchment areas of the two agglomerations Wien and Brno. Its ro
le and development perspective thus constitute somewhat uncharted terrain
 – a perfect location for reflecting “Spatial planning at the fringes
”. \nWe will be located in Drosendorf Castle. The baroque castle was bu
ilt in its current form in the 17th century and was gently renovated in 20
21\, making it accessible to guests as a hotel and seminar location. Today
\, Schloss Drosendorf is a hotel and location of the “landuni” project
\, a cooperation between TU Wien and the province of Lower Austria to fost
er exchange between the university and the municipality to revive the regi
on with constant teaching\, research and scholarly events at the intersect
ion of planning research and regional development “on site”. \nThe pr
ogram foresees a day trip to neighboring Znojmo\, where Loucký klášter\
, a former Premonstratensian monastery south of Znojmo\, will serve as wor
kshop location for one day. The day-trip is completely organized by the Ph
D Workshop organizers in advance and is included in the overall costs of t
he AESOP PhD Workshop.\n\nTravel information\nDrosendorf Castle offers ide
al conditions for working in a peaceful atmosphere\, including multiple se
minar rooms\, various indoor and outdoor work areas\, a café and a restau
rant in walking distance.\nWhile Drosendorf can be reached by public trans
port in 2\,5h from Vienna Central Station and 3h from Vienna Airport\, two
bus transfers between Vienna Main Train Station and Drosendorf Castle wil
l be organized for the participants on Monday\, 21 September\, in the afte
rnoon and on Tuesday\, 22 September\, in the morning (depending on the act
ual composition and needs of the workshop participants).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
