Description

The need for sustainable rural revitalization has become a pressing global challenge. Innovation ecosystem plays a significant role for driving local revitalization, economic growth and social inclusion in rural area. It explores main research question: How can HEIs enhance governance frameworks to foster innovation ecosystems and drive rural revitalization?
The study draws on the innovative model of Science and Technology Backyards (STBs) in China as a case study. STBs represent rural innovation initiative where higher education institutions (HEIs) collaborate with rural communities, leveraging scientific expertise and local governance to drive agricultural innovation and socio-economic development. These backyards serve as living laboratories where students, researchers, and farmers co-develop solutions tailored to local needs.
The study highlights the importance of participatory governance frameworks that integrate diverse stakeholders, including local governments, academia, industry, and rural communities. It emphasizes the role of HEIs in enabling knowledge transfer and capacity building while aligning innovation initiatives with local needs and cultural contexts. Additionally, the research identifies key barriers, such as policy fragmentation and resource limitations, that hinder the effective integration of HEIs into rural innovation ecosystems. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on rural revitalization by underscoring the significance of governance and higher educations in creating sustainable and inclusive rural innovation ecosystems. This research will appeal to policymakers, academics, and practitioners seeking to develop holistic strategies for empowering HEIs and addressing urban-rural disparities .
