Description

Pallameang Area, located in the coastal region of South Sulawesi Indonesia, is highly vulnerable to tidal flooding, posing significant risks to the safety and well-being of its resident. This study aims to develop adaptation strategies for sustainable settlement development based on the evaluation of physical, social and economic vulnerability levels. A mixed-methods approach was employed by combining qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Data were collected through field observations, interviews, documentation and literature reviews. Analytical techniques includes descriptive analysis, spatial analysis, and the computation of vulnerability indices to assess settlement characteristics and flooding susceptibility.

The findings reveal that Pallameang area is categorized as highly susceptible to tidal flooding. In physical aspects, deficiencies remain in drainage systems and waste management networks. In addition, some prominent facilities including education and worship infrastructure only meet basic standards. Meanwhile, socioeconomic conditions are marked by a predominance of self-employed residents with below-average income. Education levels are relatively modest, with most residents having completed high school, and the community continues to maintain traditional cultural practices.

The high-risk classification necessitates proactive adaptation strategies. Proposed measures include the enhancement of drainage infrastructure, construction of seawalls, and the implementation of community-based programs to strengthen disaster resilience. Additionally, accommodative strategies, such as public education, disaster awareness campaigns, and the formation of community preparedness groups, are recommended to improve the adaptive capacity of local populations.

This research underscores the importance of integrating structural and non-structural adaptation strategies to reduce vilnerabilities and enhance the resilience of coastal settlements. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, planners, and stakeholders to develop suatinable and context-specific interventions, ensuring the long-term safety and prosperity of Pallameang Area amidst the challanges posed by tidal flooding nd clinate change
