Description

In recent years, several spatial scenario studies and spatial visions have been published in the Netherlands. This article provides an overview of the most significant spatial outlook studies, such as the Spatial Outlook 2023 (PBL 2023), A nature-based future for the Netherlands in 2120 (WUR 2019) and the Deltascenarios (Deltares 2024), as well as metropolitan visions for the regions of Amsterdam, Arnhem and Nijmegen. In all these scenario studies and visions, maps and other forms of visualization played an important role in various stages of the research and publication process of the projects. Maps are powerful tools to communicate and discuss the content of spatial scenarios with policy makers, planners and the public. Scenario projects and spatial visions become more accessible when they are visually represented by maps, promoting a better understanding of spatial characteristics and differences. This in turn leads to more comprehensive and better informed discussions about possible futures and spatial choices. After describing the context and methodology for producing the scenario studies and spatial visions, this article explores the role of mapping and visualization in the impact of the studies.
