Description

The concept of cultural landscape echoes the trend towards three-dimensional, holistic, and dynamic inheritance and protection of historical and cultural heritage. Under the perspective of cultural landscape, ordinary areas lacking heritage can be found special value of culture. This study takes Suqian area as an example, attempting to explore the water culture value of Suqian area at large scales from the perspective of cultural landscape, based on literature and field research. On the basis of sorting out the historical context of the relationship between people and water in Suqian area, this article summarizes the basic types and characteristics of the cultural heritage in Suqian area. Under different types of human-water relationships like defense, management, and utilization, Suqian area has formed a unique water network and irrigation system, and has nurtured harmonious coexistence between people, water, villages. Along with cultural tradition of , Suqian area are transformed from a flood-stricken-area to the-land-of-plenty. Furthermore, the value of the water cultural heritage in Suqian area can be distilled into three aspects: firstly, the spirit of water management in which the people fight against water and turn water disasters into water conservancy; secondly, the evolutionary history of the coexistence and integration of villages and water; thirdly, the witness of the iteration of the modern rural governance system in Jiangsu. Finally, this article proposes strategies such as reorganizing routes of water culture and jointly building community systems of water management. These strategies will provide experience for the inheritance, protection, and revitalization of water cultural heritage in Suqian area as well.
