Description
Incremental historic urban district renovation has become a political consensus and trendy research field in China. Intertwined challenges have made sustainable incremental renovation an increasingly demanding job. This paper would like to introduce recent explorations with Beijing Hutong renovations as examples, illustrating the challenges and outlooks of incremental historic urban district renovation in China. The theoretical studies and the case evaluation in this research will benefit further incremental historic urban district renovation in and beyond Beijing Hutong.
The paper would like to:
(1) Introduce what is “incremental HUD renovation” and how it becomes a political consensus in China
(2) Summarize major challenges in Hutong development and conservation, namely population-space conflicts, spatial and social fragmentation, community management gaps, and community devitalization.
(3) Develop a theoretical and technical framework to generate sensible lessons from representative renovation cases by evaluating their processes and results.
(4) Introduce and evaluate a representative incremental HUD renovation case in China (Beijing Dongsinan district) and generate reflections and recommendations
