Description

Street space as a public open space in urban areas functions not only for mobility but also as a place for the informal economy, such as street vendors (PKL) activities. This research explores how street space in Makassar City can be utilized equitably through temporary and sharing space approaches, which accommodate the needs of the informal economy without reducing the main function of public space. The research method involved field observations, interviews with street vendors, city residents, shop owners, and government, and spatial analysis using kernel density-based mapping. Results show that the temporary approach allows street space to be utilized interchangeably based on time while sharing space creates an inclusive space that supports social and economic interaction. Implementing these two approaches increases the efficiency of road space use, contributing significantly to the local economy while reducing conflicts between space users. This research provides theoretical contributions to studying spatial justice and urban public space and practical benefits in the form of inclusive and adaptive spatial planning policy recommendations. The implications of this research support more equitable and sustainable urban governance while improving the quality of life of urban communities through optimal utilization of public space.
