Description

Tourism, one of the four primary leisure sectors alongside culture, sports, and entertainment, has witnessed a significant rise in both mass tourism and niche interest travel, exacerbating challenges at tourist destinations during global crises. The commodification of space, nature, culture, and heritage has transformed these elements into marketable assets, leading to attractions that often result in overtourism. However, rather than merely perceiving this phenomenon as a problem, this paper advocates for a transformative approach that views overtourism as an opportunity for regenerative tourism.

This paper examines how regenerative tourism can address the challenges posed by overtourism and global crises. It explores the integration of principles such as sustainability, community engagement, and cultural preservation into current planning practices. By adopting place-based strategies and effective governance, the paper suggests that tourism destinations can mitigate the negative impacts of overtourism while promoting climate resilience and environmental sustainability.

The study delves into case studies where regenerative tourism practices have been successfully implemented. For example, one case study illustrates how a popular tourist destination reimagined its spaces to accommodate the growing commodification of culture and heritage without compromising their authenticity. Another case study examines innovative approaches employed to transform the adverse effects of overtourism into opportunities for environmental rejuvenation.

The paper concludes that regenerative tourism offers a promising outlook for the tourism industry. It underscores the importance of local identity and co-creation in place marketing and branding, emphasizing the temporal dimension of tourism—slow (alternative) rather than fast (mass). By embracing these principles, tourism destinations can preserve their cultural and natural environments while fostering economic growth and resilience.
